Paolo Sorrentino’s magisterial Il Divo reaches into the tumultuous political history of

post-war Italy to craft a dazzling portrait of one of the period’s most complex and

ambiguous figures, Giulio Andreotti (Toni Servillo). Arguably the most important Italian

politician of the last fifty years, Andreotti entered politics in 1946 and led seven

governments, turning his Christian Democratic party into a force that ran Italy in what

was essentially a one-party system. To do so clearly required a man of singular abilities

– but Andreotti was, and remains, an enigma to his fellow countrymen.

The film eschews the traditional biopic format in favour of a far more claustrophobic,

focused look at the man. This concentration of energy and force pays high dividends,

especially as Sorrentino has found a perfect vessel in Servillo, an actor who loses

himself in the role and effectively “becomes” Andreotti before our eyes. From the film’s

opening moments when we are confronted with Andreotti – in intense close-up, with

acupuncture needles covering his face – we are unmistakably in the hands of a master.

What is fascinating about Il Divo is the manner by which it hones in on a man who is

apparently more interested in obtaining power than actually wielding it. Andreotti is a

tightly coiled, extremely controlled, almost emotionless field of energy who successfully

navigates the backroom corridors of power but appears unconcerned and uninterested

in issues of policy. Sorrentino’s conceit is not to skim the surface of Andreotti’s political

accomplishments, but to stare as if through a microscope into the more private corridors

of his thoughts. This he does with an intense desire to see and understand, though

Chuireadh leagan amharclainne don tríú scannán don straith -Vajra Sky Over Tibet- ar stáitse sna Stáit Aontaithe i 2006.Mar eagartóir scannáintí, tá Ó'Céilleachair taréis oibriú ar tograí difriúile, mar shampla Wes Craven’s Music from the Heart (1999) agus The Simian Line (2001) – inar ghlac páirt William Hurt, Lynn Redgrave, Cindy Crawford agus Harry Connick Jr. Mar comh-eagartóir , tá obair déanta aige leis an léiritheor cáiliúl ón Iaráin - Amir Naderi  - ar an scannán Marathon (2002). Sa bhlian 1996, bhunaigh Ó'Céilleachair Ocularis – pictiúrlann ealaíona seachtanúil.  Bhí an-éilimh agus tionchar ar an áit – go háirithe do scannánaithe ealaíona,  mar go raibh spás ann anois dóibh chun a gcuid saothair a thaispeáint. Bhí cáil ar an áit de bharr chaighdéan an chlár ealaíona a bhí á gcur i láthair ann. De réir Artforum Magazine ainmníodh Ocularis  ‘One of the most innovative film venues in New York’ . Beidh siad ag obair le ríl scannánaíochta 35mm – bunaithe ar traidisiún scannánaíochta  a leitheidí  Stan Brakhage agus go hairithe an scannán claisiceach sin a dhein sé i 1963 – ‘Motlight’ inar úsáideadh ós cionn 1,000 sciatháin leamhain greamaithe le ríl scannánaíochta 35mm chun saothair scannánaíochta do scoth a dhéanamh. You could say Brakhage puts the “anima” back into animation, reanimating the dead, painstakingly affixing the remains of dead insects, leaves and the like onto the film strip, and feeding it through the projector back to life. Noel Hill is a master musician in the Irish Tradition. He grew up near Lissycasey in Co. Clare in a family in which traditional music was a key element in every day life. Both his parents and his uncle Padraig A’Chnoic played the concertina so it was hardly surprising that Noel followed in their footsteps. Noel Hill's virtuosity has firmly established him as the defining Irish concertina player of our time.

Tony Linnane is renowned as a fiddle player of outstanding ability. His distinctive playing has superb fluency and flow in its style and is characterised by impeccable technique and a wealth of feeling and sensitivity. He is recognised as on of the finest exponents of the instrument in Ireland today.

The duo released ‘Noel Hill & Tony Linnane’, recorded in 1979 on the Tara label and to this day it is still regarded as one of the finest traditional Irish music records of all time. It was re-released on CD in 1996. The duo are highly regarded for their seminal performance on this CD and have come together again for this concert.

Alec Finn plays bouzouki with great sensitivity to the music. Although he played blues on his guitar while living in Dublin, Finn turned to traditional Irish music after moving to Galway in the early '70s. Acquiring a bouzouki as a gift from a friend who travelled to Greece, he became one of the first musicians to adapt the instrument to Irish music. A regular at Irish music sessions and concerts, he has performed widely with De Danann.

Lillis O Laoghaire is no stranger to audiences of traditional music – he is a scholar and a fine exponent of sean-nós singing.

ConTempo String Quartet was formed in 1995 when the members were students at the Music University in Bucharest, Romania. ConTempo Quartet became Galway’s first Ensemble-in-Residence in January 2003. The Ensemble-in-Residence project is designed to bring music to new people and new venues in Galway City and County, and to broaden the experience of those already involved in music. During their Galway residency, ConTempo has performed throughout the city and county, given workshops in nearly 100 primary and secondary schools, hosted an international lecture series, and worked with local orchestras and choirs as well as individual musicians, both classical and traditional. In 2007 ConTempo released "Spiccato Junction", a CD with traditional musicians Martin O'Connor, Cathal Hayden and Garry O' Briain. Funded by the Music Network, the CD features their unique combination of Romanian and Irish traditional tunes which has thrilled audiences in Ireland for several years. As part of their outreach programme, ConTempo will be visiting Scoil Naomh Abán, Baile Mhúirne, on the 8^th Feb and that evening the quartet will perform  Haydn's String Quartet in B flat, Op. 76 no. 4, 'Sunrise', Schubert's Quartettsatz (Movement for string quartet) in C minor, D. 703 and Beethoven's String Quartet in F major, Op. 18, no. 1, 'Romeo and Juliet'

Dublin-born imaginative fiddler Caoimhín, flowing Sligo/Roscommon style flute player Catherine and flying- fingers concertina player Micheal join forces for this not-to-be missed trad gig. On stage also will be masterclass students of Catherine -  young emerging talented musicians  - Nell Ni Chroínin, Maighréad Carey, Eilís Ni Shúilleabhain and Peadar Mac Suibhne.
