CAD ATÁ AR SIÚL / WHAT'S ON

25.05.18 - Cordeen

le Benny McCarthy, Conor Moriarty, Billy Sutton, Graham Wells

Tuairiscíodh gurbh é Talamh an Éisc an áit is mó in Éirinn taobh amuigh d'Éirinn le ceangal dhíreacha go stairiúil i ndeisceart na hÉireann go háirithe i gcontaetha cosúil le Port Láirge, Loch Garman, Tiobraid Árann, Corcaigh agus Cill Chainnigh. Díreach mar atá anseo sa bhaile, tá a thraidisiún féin de cheol, amhrán, rince agus scéal ag an dTalamh an Éisc, rud a tháinig i bhfad as traidisiún na hÉireann. Is é an príomh úrlais a bhaineann le ceol traidisiúnta i dTalamh an Éisc ná an Accordion, is eol don úrlais freisin mar 'Cordeen' a thagann mar fhéiniteach don fhocal 'Cairdín'.

Le dhá bhliain anuas tá an grúpa 'Cordeen' ag seinnt ceoil lena chéile - Benny McCarthy (Danú) agus Conor Moriarty (Champion Champion All-Ireland 2010) ó chontaetha stairiúla Phort Láirge agus Chiarraí in Éirinn. Tá Billy Sutton (The Fables) agus Graham Well's (sean-Irish Descendants) ó Harbour Grace agus St. John's in Talamh an Éisc. Tugann na baill go léir níos mó ná dhá fhiche bliain taithí ag ceoil, ó ealaíontóirí turasóireachta idirnáisiúnta chuig táirgeoirí stiúideo agus ceolchoirmeacha. Tá an nasc cultúrtha idir Éire agus Talamh an Éisc ag croílár Cordeen, gach rud as an fhírinne beo-chosanta le hamhráin agus le hainmhithe.

An bhliain seo caite, taifeadadh agus scaoil Cordeen an chéad albam 'Musical Bridge' le moladh criticiúil. Thosaigh an banna ar dhá thuras rathúil i 2017, i mí an Mheithimh in Éirinn agus i Meán Fómhair i dTír an Éisc. Rinne critéir agus lucht féachana a gceolchoirmeacha d'aon toil a bheith mar thaithí uathúil cultúrtha agus an-siamsaíocht. Bíonn ceol, amhrán, aithris agus spraoi ag gach ceolchoirm bríomhar as an dá thaobh den lochán. Is ceolchoirm fíorúil uathúil é ceolchoirm Cordeen - atá lán de fhuinneamh agus mothúchán!

I mí Bealtaine, beidh an banna ar ais in hÉirinn chun camchúirt 12 lá a dhéanamh le ceolchoirmeacha i 7 gcontae. Beidh siad san Ionad Cultúrtha ar an Aoine 25ú Bealtaine @ 8:30. Moltar réamh-áirithint a dhéanamh ag 026.45733.

Newfoundland has been described as the most Irish place outside of Ireland with direct connections historically to the South of Ireland especially in counties like Waterford, Wexford, Tipperary, Cork & Kilkenny. Just like here at home, Newfoundland has its own tradition of music, song, dance and story much of which evolved from the Irish tradition. The main instrument associated with traditional music in Newfoundland is the Accordion, the instrument is also known over there as 'Cordeen' which comes as a phonetic of the Gaelic word 'Cairdín'.

Over the past two years the group 'Cordeen' came on stream, a band Benny McCarthy (Danú) and Conor Moriarty (All-Ireland Champion 2010) hail from historic counties Waterford and Kerry in Ireland. Billy Sutton (The Fables) and Graham Well's (ex-The Irish Descendants) are from Harbour Grace & St.Johns in Newfoundland. All the members bring over two decades of experience in the music industry, from International touring artists to studio and concert producers. The cultural connection between Ireland and Newfoundland is at the musical heart of Cordeen, everything from the lively foot-tapping tune to heartfelt songs and airs.

Last year Cordeen recorded and released their debut album 'Musical Bridge' to critical acclaim. The band embarked on two hugely successful tours in 2017, June in Ireland and September in Newfoundland. Critics and audiences have unanimously labelled their Concerts as being a unique cultural and a highly entertaining experience. Their lively concert features music, song, recitation and fun from both sides of the pond. A Cordeen concert is a truly unique musical experience - full of energy, emotion and wit! On May 24th the band return to Ireland to undertake a 12-day tour in Ireland with stops in 7 counties.
